Bulgaria and Romania Join Schengen Zone After 13-Year Wait

On Sunday, March 31, 2024 Bulgaria and Romania were able to partially join the expansive Schengen zone of free travel after 13 years of waiting. This is a major step forward for European integration. By taking this action, border checks in these areas will be eliminated and travel by air and water will be smooth. However, Austria's worries about possible inflows of asylum seekers mean that land border measures will remain in place.

Good news for travellers, indeed! Travel by air or sea between Bulgaria, Romania, and other Schengen member states is now possible without a visa. Travel to these nations will now be permitted with an existing Schengen visa. If you were intending to cross the border by land, be advised that controls remain in place since Austria continues to be concerned about possible inflows of asylum seekers. It is anticipated that discussions on complete Schengen access, including land borders, would go on until 2025.
